NECCSA Update: May 2003

A monthly newsletter on Church and Environment in South Africa

1. Environment Sunday: 8 June 2003

Environment Sunday is celebrated by Christians all over the world on the Sunday closest to World Environment Day (5 June). All NECCSA members have committed themselves to help ensure that this day is celebrated in Christian communities in South Africa too.

On the NECCSA website you will find a set liturgy that may be used for this purpose as well as a detailed exegetical discussion (in Afrikaans) on Romans 8:18-25 - which is the text indicated by the Lectionary for this Sunday. This is a very appropriate text given that this Sunday is both Pentecost and Environment Sunday. A possible theme for the liturgy could therefore be: "The Spirit eagerly anticipates a new dispensation for God's whole creation."

Please let us now afterwards what happened on Environment Sunday where you worship so that we can communicate your witness and any innovative suggestions to others.

2. Oil, Africa, environment

The editorial of New People, a magazine published by the Comboni Missionaries based in Nairobi, warns of a coming power struggle over African oil. In this article, entitled "Black Gold: Black is not Always Beautiful!" the Comboni Fathers argue that America is getting more and more involved in the developing oil industry of African countries. You will find a summary of this thought-provoking report on the NECCSA website.
